19 charming winners of the Dog Photography Awards

Did you know that dogs can probably smell your stress? Or what our dog friends probably dream about? Scientists continue to study and discover fascinating facts about our furry best friends. This month, researchers at Harvard Medical School’s Howard Hughes Medical Institute revealed new insights into the neural mechanism behind why wet dogs twitch (like the dog pictured above).

The Dog photography prices celebrate everything we love about dogs with images that capture their raw charm and diverse characters. This year’s winners were selected from 1,700 entries from more than 60 different countries. The jury, consisting of photographers, dog experts and industry leaders, awarded prizes in five categories: Action, Documentary, Dogs and People, Portrait and Studio.

sled dogs in a snowy landscape while a man untangles ropes
“Greenland flat tire.” First place, Documentary
This photo was taken while traveling through a snowstorm from Siorapaluk, the world’s northernmost indigenous village, to Qaanaaq, Greenland. We had no GPS, cell service, or the ability to communicate more than a few words in English. Our protection if we encountered a polar bear was a 1940 rifle and the fight within our 13 Greenland Huskies. We had to stop so my guide, Ilannguaq, could untangle the sled ropes. The dogs watched and waited patiently to get back to doing their favorite thing in the world: running.

“Ready to go.” First place, Portrait
Every muscle in white shepherd ‘Kooki’ is ready! He can jump at any moment.
At first we just let Kooki stand in front of the museum, but he wanted to play. So his dog mom threw his Frisbee in the air and I managed to capture this pose.

This is Santos, a podenco rescued by Hope For Podencos. I visited them in Albacete, Spain, as part of my book project on Podencos,
Podencos are a terribly abused hunting dog breed in Spain. Every year, after the hunting season ends, thousands are dumped and a lucky few are rescued by rescue organizations like Hope For Podencos. With my photography I try to help as much as possible: together we are stronger!

Rune is a man with heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease due to his long work in a concrete factory, and his only happiness in life is his dog Hajen. If he loses Hajen, he will probably die within a few days as he will lose all meaning of life and give up everything. Their bond is so strong and they really love each other.

This photo was taken in Collarenebri, NSW, Australia. I documented the country’s working dogs and visited a wool farm during the shearing season. After the sheep were sheared and sprayed with an aqua-colored anti-lice spray, the dogs led them to the other side of the 9,000-acre property. This dog is a Kelpie, the most common and respected working dog in Australia.
