TV giant Fremantle has acquired worldwide rights to “Penelope,” the coming-of-age indie drama produced by Duplass Brothers Productions (“Somebody Somewhere,” “Room 104”)
The eight-part series, created by Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn, premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and will launch on Netflix in the US on September 24.
The series follows Penelope, played by Megan Stott (“Little Fires Everywhere”, “Yes day“), a 16-year-old who feels out of place in modern society and is drawn into the unknown wilderness, where she begins to build a new life for herself in a National Forest.
In addition to Stott, the cast also includes Austin Abrams (“Euphoria,” “Dash & Lily”), Krisha Fairchild (“Krisha,” “Channel Zero”) and Rhenzy Feliz (“The Penguin,” “All Together Now”).
“It is an honor to partner with the esteemed Duplass Brothers to introduce ‘Penelope’ to the world. This premium coming-of-age series has a strong emotional heart and beautiful production values, while tackling important, timely and relatable issues that consume our daily lives,” said Rebecca Dundon, senior vice president of scripted content for the international Fremantle.. “Penelope’s gripping story of survival and self-discovery will undoubtedly capture the hearts of millions across borders.”
Co-creator Eslyn added: “Penelope is very dear to us and we wouldn’t trust her to just anyone. We are grateful to have found partners who understand, support and encourage the story we are trying to tell and the broader conversation we hope to inspire.”
“Penelope” was written and created by Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show,” “The One I Love”) and Mel Eslyn (“Biosphere,” “Room 104”). Duplass and Eslyn are producing alongside Jay Duplass (“Industry,” “The Chair”) and Shuli Harel of Duplass Brothers Productions. Eslyn also directs and serves as showrunner.
