Next week is the final meeting of the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee

The 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which was appointed two years ago by the Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Agriculture (USDA), will meet for the final time next week.

The final sessions are scheduled for Monday, October 21 and Tuesday, October 22, from 11am to 6pm EDT on both days.

The 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee consists of twenty nationally recognized experts in the field of nutrition and public health. The committee is charged with reviewing current nutritional science on specific topics and questions and developing a scientific report that includes independent, evidence-based advice for HHS and USDA to consider.

The HHS and USDA departments are using the committee’s review and public comments on its scientific report and the agency’s input to develop the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Throughout the Committee’s tenure, members have worked together in public and subcommittee meetings, developed evidence review protocols, reviewed and synthesized evidence, presented scientific findings, considered public comments, and developed and submitted scientific reports.

The 2025 Commission has examined the relationship between nutrition and health at all stages of life. It will use a health equity lens in assessing evidence to ensure that factors such as socio-economic status, race, ethnicity and culture are described and considered as much as possible based on the information from the scientific literature and data.

This will help HHS and USDA ensure that the resulting guidelines in the Dietary Guidelines are relevant to people from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds. To support this process, Committee members have significant expertise in human nutrition health equity and experience conducting research among diverse populations.

During the final meeting, the committee will review and discuss the scientific findings and advice that will be included in its scientific report. Each subcommittee and working group will review and share its advice for committee discussion, and federal staff will discuss next steps in developing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans for 2025 to 2030.

At the final meeting, the committee will finalize its scientific report and submit it to HHS and USDA. The departments will then post the report on DietaryGuidelines.gov, along with any additional documents, including data analysis reports, dietary pattern modeling reports, and systematic reviews. A new comment period will open to gather public input on the report.

The departments will use this input to develop the next edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
