Do you feel like this is the end of the world? Wake up every morning dreading turning on the news? Are there reasons to be cheerful, you ask yourself, a lame reason to laugh in the dark? We hear you, here at Lynn Loves Jewelry! And because we are known to view the world through jewel-toned glasses (admittedly difficult, but we can do it), we’re happy to report that there are certain glitter prizes that actually seem to embody hope and change.
After all, a ballerina spinning in her jewelry box at home keeps spinning no matter what happens outside her little universe. You may feel like crying, but a smiley ring rendered in gemstones will keep you grinning on your finger. And nothing can stop a diamond bird from flying high in the sky. Still not convinced? Take the case of Mickey Mouse, whose funny, sunny face came to the rescue at least once before.
In 1933, at the height of the global economic depression, the Ingersoll-Waterbury watch company launched the first Mickey Mouse watch. Like so many other companies, Ingersoll teetered on the brink of bankruptcy, but Mickey saved the day: upon release, Macy’s sold 11,000 of these cartoon watches. They retailed for $3.75 and turned out to be remarkably sturdy. (We can testify to this: we actually own one of the original models from the 1930s, and it still works – well, sort of.)
So may we humbly suggest that we take solace in a cheerful piece of jewelry, a special treat that offers a little comfort while we wait for the clouds to clear? Below is a list of cheerful pieces, including – because we can find everything! – an exact replica of that original Mickey watch from the 1930s.
