Based on the evidence from the spring show and this pre-fall collection, The Garment comes into its own. The Copenhagen-based label was founded in 2020 by industry veteran Charlotte Eskildsen, who enlisted Sophia Roe’s help from the start. The influencer left after the show in the spring of 2024 and the designer has been flying solo ever since, but in good company: members of the Danish royal family have been spotted at some shows.
Speaking of the Spring 2024 collection, its bow details were transferred to the backs of tops and jackets for fall, just as the flowy organza tops that opened the spring show were abbreviated here. Suffice it to say that Eskildsen takes an evolutionary approach to design. “It’s going to be a touchpoint for me to create something that I think will last longer,” she said during a phone call. “I’m not really focused on what the new thing is…. I feel it’s time to move on [things] that you have put a lot of effort into the development.”
The simplicity and definitiveness of the brand name suggest a focus on redesigned garments. (Eskildsen’s other B Corp-certified brand, founded in 2002, is called Designers Remix.) The focus of The Garment’s pre-fall was on combining “something very pure and something very heavy,” the designer said. So a semi-sheer shirt is paired with a gray suit with a bow detail on the chest pocket, and that jacket is later shown with a chiffon skirt, while double knits are layered over a thin knit turtleneck. This collection also brings together French and Scandinavian girls’ styles. Eskildsen has a house in France, near Fondation Maeght, which she says reminds her a bit of Louisiana in Denmark. Inspired by the colors of the South of France, she has created a collection that is both polished and practical.
