Our verdict
If you can’t afford a flagship Dyson heater with air-purifying technology, the AM09 has a lot going for it, beyond just being cheaper – although it’s still quite expensive by plug-in heater standards. But it is compact, built to a high standard and offers good performance and features.

Dyson fan heaters tend to be large and expensive, largely because they include air-purifying technology and smart features like Wi-Fi connectivity, but there is a more affordable option.
Meet the Dyson Hot+Cool Jet Focus AM09. Sure, it’s still far from budget-friendly at £399/$499, but it’s readily available at a more accessible price point. £269/$299 – and if you want a Dyson instead of a dupe, this is a solid option.
Dyson classifies it as a desk fan, but while it’s a lot smaller than most of the brand’s products, including the Pure Hot+Cool, I wouldn’t be so quick to put it on my desk. It could be, but I would say this is more of a floor-friendly device.

If you’re looking for something desk-friendly, check out the Dreo 16-inch space heater, which costs around £60 from Amazon, or the Dreo Atom One space heater, $49.99 from Dreo.
It has a nice compact size and shape (595 mm high), small but powerful and light enough at 2.6 kg, so you can move it around the house easily without any problems.
Installation is simple and essentially involves attaching the base, plugging it in (the 6-foot cord gives you plenty of room) and turning it on. I didn’t need the manual.
Once the AM09 is ready to use, you will have a range of different modes and settings at your disposal. As the full name suggests, the device can heat or cool and you can choose between fan speed and temperature.

The latter is something you’re unlikely to find with some cheaper alternatives, which simply blow hot air unless you manually switch them off. Dyson offers a temperature range of 0-37°C and is thermostatic, so it automatically switches off when the room reaches the right temperature and tops up when it drops.
The AM09 can also pan left and right (although it can’t be angled) and has two different modes to choose from: Diffuse and Jet Focus. The former is a wider spread of air and the latter gives you a narrow blast.
You can also set a timer and the remote control, as usual, attaches to the top of the fan with magnets, which is handy.

Important information such as temperature and fan speed (if you adjust them) is visible on the fan via a small screen above the built-in power button. It works as advertised, but is close to the floor if you have the AM09 there.
I found that the unit heats very well, and is also very quiet thanks to the bladeless design. Plus, I don’t have to put him in the loft when summer comes, because he cools down too.

Should you buy the Dyson Hot Cool Jet Focus AM09?
Overall, if it’s within your budget, the Dyson Hot+Cool Jet Focus AM09 is a great option for a fan that heats and cools in a compact size with lots of useful features.
It is suitable for boxroom offices like mine, but also for many other spaces such as loft conversions and garden rooms. I’d like to have it in more colors than the standard white nickel combination (although the US is also getting a more attractive satin black/nickel color scheme).
