Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said Luka Dončić is “doing well” after the 25-year-old star’s home was burglarized on Friday. This was the latest in a series of burglaries at the homes of professional athletes in recent months.
“I reached out and texted him,” Kidd said Saturday. “He’s doing fine (after) going through that incident. Glad no one was hurt. I spoke to him today.”
No one was home at the time of the burglary and an investigation into the incident is ongoing, Dončić’s business manager Lara Beth Seager told several media outlets. Jewelry valued at approximately $30,000 was taken from the home The Dallas Morning Newswho obtained an internal police report.
It is unclear who broke into Dončić’s house.
Since September, the homes of at least six professional athletes, including Dončić, have been burglarized. On September 15, the home of Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley was burglarized. On November 2, Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis was burglarized.
On October 6, a burglary occurred at the home of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in Missouri; Mahomes called the incident “frustrating” and “disappointing.” Mahomes’ teammate Travis Kelce also had his home burglarized in October. On December 9, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s Ohio home was burglarized.
The NFL and NBA issued memos in November about the threat of burglary groups targeting the homes of professional athletes.
The NBA memo indicated that the FBI had identified “transnational South American theft groups” that are “reportedly highly organized, sophisticated rings that incorporate advanced techniques and technologies, including pre-surveillance, drones and signal jamming devices.”
Dončić suffered a left calf strain during the Mavericks’ December 25 game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He is expected to be sidelined for at least a month.
The Mavericks started a four-game road trip with a win against the Phoenix Suns on Friday.
