(Bloomberg) – Softbank Group Corp. is in advanced conversations to acquire Ampere Computing LLC, people who are familiar with the case.

The Japanese company discusses a deal that the by Oracle Corp. Supported chip designer could appreciate around $ 6.5 billion, including debts, according to people. They can be announced a transaction in the coming weeks, they said.

Bloomberg News reported last month that Softbank and Chip Designer Arm Holdings PLC, which majority is in the hands of Softbank, had shown interest in an acquisition of Ampere.

Although conversations are at an advanced stage, they can still be delayed or falter, the people said, asking for not being identified about confidential information. Representatives of Ampere, Arm and Softbank refused to comment.

A deal for Ampere, whose early donors also private equity company Carlyle Group Inc. Including would contribute to a wave of chip companies that want to benefit from a spending tree in artificial intelligence. Oracle said last year that it can exercise 29% of Ampère and future investment options that would give control of the company.

Ampere, which makes processors for data center machines using the technology of poor, was appreciated at more than $ 8 billion in a proposed minority investment by the Japanese Softbank in 2021, Bloomberg News reported at the time. But the chips market has since become more competitive, with various large technology companies that hurry to develop the same types of products that Ampere makes.

On Wednesday, Arm gave a cautious income prediction, which adds to concern that the expenses for AI Computing are slowing down. The company expects a turnover of $ 1.18 billion to $ 1.28 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter, which runs until March.

The outlook follows a disappointing prediction of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Earlier this week, and feared that the flowering market for AI hardware is now on more intense terrain. The Chinese startup Deepseek, which revealed a cheap AI model last month, has increased the ghost that technology suppliers will not generate as much income as predicted.
