Johannes Cena breaks up with the WWE. At the Money in the Bank live event held in Toronto, Canada, on Saturday, July 6, the 47-year-old wrestler announced that he will be stepping back from the World Wrestling Entertainment company.
“Tonight I am announcing my retirement from the WWE,” the sportsman turned actor told the crowd at the Scotiabank Arena.
The Argylle star noted that he will undertake one final tour with the WWE in 2025.
He will perform at shows such as Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania.
“I hear a mixed opinion there. Lots of questions perhaps, right? Why here? I want to talk about that for a moment. I want to talk about Toronto. I actually want to talk about Canada. By the way, I want to talk about Canadians,” Cena continued in his speech.
Cena continued, “I’ve been doing this for a while. I’ve been in WWE for over twenty years and in that time I’ve seen incredible waves of prosperity like we have today. WWE is without a doubt the hottest ticket in town.
“And I have also seen tremendous hardship and that is when no one knows your name, no one wants to be your friend and only the most dedicated, hardcore fans are by your side,” the athlete said.
“So over all these years, one of the most important, one of the most impactful things I learned was whether the WWE was hot or cold, Canadians always show up,” Cena said of the big maple country.
He added: “You all built this into what it is today, which, in my eyes, makes this the perfect place to say what I have to say.”
“This farewell does not end tonight. It is full of opportunities,” he said. “I would like to thank you. Thank you so much for letting me play in the house you built for so many years. Thank you so much for your voice because it is very loud, and your honesty because it is beautifully brutal. and most of all, thank you so much for letting me be here with you tonight,” he continued emotionally.
Cena signed with WWE in 2001 and has been performing part-time since 2018, and is credited with being a 16-time world champion over the years.
