Asda has confirmed that more than 10,000 of his managers will not receive their annual bonuses this year, after a worrying slide of the performance in the once-flowering supermarket chain.

The cancellation cancellation comes in the midst of the worst Christmas sales in a decade and a slip in market share of 13.7 percent to 12.6 percent, a great pressure on the leadership team to reverse the fortuines of the retailer.

The suspension of the bonus scheme, which is unveiled shortly before ASDA is unveiled, is expected to publish the financial results of last year, it is expected to dampen the moral among staff. A former senior employee warned that the setback would be devastating and said: “Morally will be a low point. Even Allan [Leighton] She can’t pick it up. This means that part of the top talent looks elsewhere. “A recruiter added that the bonus lowers the risk and causes” anarchy “within the organization.

Allan Leighton, who was removed as an executive chairman at the end of last year after more than two decades, is credited in the 1990s by transforming Asda into a shop makers. He has promised to recover what he calls the “Asda DNA”. Recent figures, however, reflect the scale of the challenge for the challenge: industrial data from Kantar reveal a turnover of 5.2 percent in the 12 weeks to 28 January.

Leighton has already taken steps to reduce overhead costs, including a restructuring of senior teams that led to the departure of 13 regional managers in February. It follows the decision at the end of last year to make hundreds of head office employees superfluous, so that the condemnation of the GMB Union was supplied about the way in which job reductions were handled.

Critics claim that the removal of bonuses, although they save costs for a price -oriented turning strategy, will do little to inspire confidence among employees at a time when only half of them say they believe in the company direction of Asda. The supermarket is still looking for a permanent chief executive after the abrupt exit of Roger Burnley in August 2021. The attempt by Lord Rose to fill the top track, so that Leighton launched the search again in January.

Asda has been closely examined intensively since the takeover of the ISSA Brothers and TDR capital. As soon as the jewel in the supermarket crown of Great Britain, the repeated setbacks has suffered, as a result of which Lord Rose – who kicked as chairman last November – labeled his performance “embarrassing”. Leighton has warned that the turnaround could take five years, a prediction that, according to the industrial analysts, is realistic in view of the current condition of the company and imminent cost pressure such as the extended producer Recycling Levy, National Insurance Changes and the National Living Low.

In addition to cutting bonuses and restructuring teams, ASDA can start further acquisitions. Leighton has hinted that he is open to deals that “create further shareholder value” by offering scale or new possibilities. However, any new investments will probably be confronted with fierce research, given the risks related to the integration of additional companies and the immediate priority of the supermarket of stabilizing performance.

A spokeswoman for Asda refused to comment on the cancellations of the bonus. However, the move underlines the challenging balance between cost management and maintaining the motivation of staff while the supermarket is fighting to regain the land in an increasingly competitive market.
