Mondelez International’s women leaders on being active in life and work
In today’s fast-paced business world, achieving a balance between professional obligations and personal well-being is essential. At Mondelēz International, this balance is not only encouraged but exemplified by leaders like Aleli Arcilla, General Manager; And Mae Corona, senior legal counsel. Their stories show how a commitment to fitness and mindful snacking can support both work and life.
Aleli Arcilla, Mondelēz International’s first female Country Leader in more than 15 years started her journey into the sport with running, initially driven by a personal goal to get fit again after the birth of her second child. “Running became a serious pursuit during my previous tenure as a marketing manager for a sports drink brand, where I was introduced to numerous races. It started as a vanity project but evolved into a passion for maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” Ms. Arcilla explains. Today, her dedication to running has shaped her leadership style. “The discipline and resilience I have developed through sport has a direct impact on my effectiveness as a leader,” she reflects.
Mae Corona, who is also a member of the company’s senior leadership, is actively involved in cycling and running. She started her journey with the goal of keeping up with her daughter’s energy. “Consistency and dedication to sports allow me to stay fit and create unforgettable experiences with my loved ones,” says Ms. Corona. Her daily routine includes early morning workouts, which keep her energetic and focused throughout the workday. “Starting my day with a physical activity clears my mind and prepares me to tackle work challenges effectively,” she notes.
Both leaders are also active participants in Mondelēz International’s ongoing activities Challenge for walking, running, cycling and traininga program designed to encourage physical activity among its employees. Conceived during the pandemic in 2021, the Challenge has provided employees with a platform to participate in various forms of physical activity, from walking and running to cycling and now workouts. “The Walk, Run, Bike, and Workout Challenge promotes a culture of wellness within our organization, making fitness both enjoyable and accessible to everyone,” says Aleli.
“Physical fitness and being active are important to us as a snack company,” adds Aleli. “We believe that while consumers should be aware of what they eat, they should also be active to prevent lifestyle diseases. Studies have shown that to prevent obesity and diabetes, a balanced diet and physical activity are equally important.”
The challenge works by encouraging employees to track their steps, miles and calories burned during exercise sessions. Since its launch in August 2024, the challenge has engaged nearly a hundred participants, with impressive results: more than eight million steps taken, thousands of miles covered by runners and cyclists, and hundreds of thousands of calories burned by those taking part in the training. The program concludes in late September, with top performers recognized during the company’s Purpose Day, a celebration of Mondelēz International’s anniversary as a snacks company.
Ms. Corona emphasizes the importance of such a focus on employee well-being, stating that “companies that value physical activity promote a positive work culture and increase overall productivity.”
Aleli added: “Through initiatives like this challenge, we are not only advocating fitness, but also making conscious lifestyle choices. It’s about encouraging each other to be the best we can be – physically, mentally and professionally.”
In addition to promoting physical fitness, Mondelēz International is a champion Mindful snacking as his plea. This approach encourages employees to make thoughtful snack choices and behaviors that align with their health goals, emphasizing the importance of enjoying each snack for greater satisfaction and fulfillment. By integrating Mindful Snacking into their routines, anyone can support their well-being alongside their fitness efforts.
