The follow -up series to “A Different World” is moving forward at Netflix, where the streamer gives one of the only pilot orders in its history for the comedy project.
According to sources, the plan shoots the pilot at the beginning of the summer to get a better idea of the tone of the show and the chemistry between the Ensemble Cast. No cast members are locked up at the time of this publication.
A person with knowledge of the situation says that Netflix does not intend to participate in a traditional pilot season such as the broadcast networks, in which shows compete for a limited number of slots.
Representatives for Netflix refused to comment.
Netflix has shun a traditional pilot process for the most part of its history and only announced their first pilot order ever in 2023. Instead, the streamer has focused on legal-to-series orders or script-to-series deals for their shows. But Netflix also said earlier that it would never have advertisements on the service to offer an advertisement-supported layer in November 2022.
Skipping a pilot is a major financial gamble. Although a show on paper sounds good, a large number of factors can lead to the idea not being transferred well enough to the screen to justify a full record. And with Hollywood who is increasingly concentrating on the Bottom Line in the aftermath of the peak TV era of excess, it can commit to shoot less and less attractive for a whole season of the bat across the board.
Even if Netflix is willing to take a limited extent on a shooting pilots, this could have widespread consequences throughout the industry. After all, the broadcast networks and other points of sale are largely influenced by the willingness of Netflix to collect shows directly. While dozens of pilots would work it out for the temporary employment networks in recent years, there are not even 10 pilots currently in the making of the Big Four.
The follow -up of “another world” was developing for the first time in August 2024. As was reported at that time, the new series would return to Hillman College, a fictional historic Black University, and follow the daughter of the original series characters Whitley and Dwayne.
Felicia Pride serves as a writer, executive producer and showrunner in the project. Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Bytgie Bythewood also serve as executive producers. Werner produced the original show via The Carsey-Werner Company, while all of the 144 episodes of the original also produced and directed. Sources say she would also lead the new pilot.
“Another world” started as a spider -off of “The Cosby Show” and followed Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) while she goes to Hillman. But after Bonet had left the series after the first season, the focus shifted to characters played by Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Dawnn Lewis, Gynn Turman, Cory Tyler, Lou Myers, Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer and Charnele Brown.
