Eminem’s estranged mother Debbie Nelson has died following her battle with lung cancer and years after a very tumultuous relationship with the iconic rapper.

In the early days of his career, Eminem often used his difficult childhood and relationships with his parents as inspiration for his hit songs.
A text from his song My name isEminem rapped, “I just found out my mom does more dope than me,” which led to his late mother filing a $10 million defamation lawsuit against him.
The lawsuit was settled in 2001 for $25,000 – $1,600 went to Nelson.
The iconic rap star also referenced his late mother in songs like Kill you and sang, “My mother always told me these crazy things…I realized she was the crazy one.”
In the song Cleaning out my closethe accused his mother of increasing drug use.

In an interview with Inside edition in 2001, Nelson spoke about her son’s famous music and the accusations he made in his songs.
She said: “It hurts. God knows I don’t deserve it.”

In 2000, Nelson released her own song for Eminem, Dear Marshallin which she apologized to the award-winning rapper and said she “did the best” she could.
A few years later, she released her tell-all book while battling breast cancer, My son Marshall, my son Eminemand shot down the allegations of negligence and abuse.
The memoir ultimately caused more friction between the troubled duo.

His grandmother, Betty, told media at the time: “I heard Marshall wasn’t too happy about Nelson writing the book and re-examining their relationship, or rather, lack thereof.
“It reopened old wounds, and in retrospect I think she regrets it.”

After a public feud that lasted many years, Eminem opened up about his rocky relationship with his estranged mother.
He told it STAKE in a 2011 interview: “Even though we don’t really speak, she’s my mother, I really love her and I think I got a better understanding of what she was going through or what she might be going through.”
Eminem then shocked fans by releasing the song Headlightsin which he apologized to his mother in 2013.
He rapped, “I don’t hate you, ’cause mommy / You’re still beautiful to me, ’cause you’re my mother.”

Two years before her death, Nelson congratulated her son on all his success after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
She wrote on X: “I love you very much. I knew you would get there. It’s been a long ride. I am very proud of you.”
