Officers responded to what police are calling an “active shooting” at a Broomfield apartment complex near the 1stBank Center on Thursday morning, police said.
“This is an ACTIVE SCENE and is NOT SAFE,” Broomfield police said in a statement statement on social media at 8:07 a.m. “…Shots are still being fired.”
Shots were fired Thursday at the Arista Flats apartment complex in Broomfield, near the 1stBankCenter and just south of UCHealth Broomfield Hospital. the police said.
A mile east of the shooting, Jefferson Academy Secondary School has a secure status, said Assistant Principal Marti Porreco. Everything is normal inside the building, but the school does not let anyone in and does not send students home.
Reverse emergency alerts have been sent to residents in the area to seek shelter and limited evacuations have been conducted, police said. People should avoid the area.
Two RTD bus routes will take a detour Thursday to avoid police activity. according to RTD officials.
Routes 120 and 112 – which travel in both directions – will skip the Uptown Avenue and Broomfield Lane stops, according to RTD service alerts.
The skipped stop is on the south side of Arista Flats, but for commuters can still board buses at the US 36 and Broomfield Station stop northwest of the apartment complex.
