Alabama company makes knee-jerk recall due to lack of inspections

Hickory Hollow Jerky, a Eufaula, AL facility, is recalling 6,229 pounds of ready-to-eat jerky products that were produced without the benefit of federal inspection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced. announced today.

The beef jerky and bacon jerky products were produced on different dates between January 19, 2024 and August 21, 2024.

The products were produced without control by two different company owners. Ownership changed hands on June 11, 2024. The name of the branch and the products have remained the same. The products subject to a recall are listed hereand the product labels can be viewed here.

The recalled products bear location number “EST. NO. 34550” within the USDA mark of approval. These items were shipped to retail locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Oklahoma and through Internet sales.

The problem was discovered during routine FSIS surveillance activities, when it was determined that the facility continued to produce these jerky products and label them with the USDA inspection mark after requesting to voluntarily cease FSIS inspection activities.

There have been no confirmed reports of side effects related to the consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS is concerned that a certain product is in consumers’ pantries. These products should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.
