A fan who attended The Avett Brothers’ show at Red Rocks Amphitheater on Friday night died after a medical event, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said.
Officers responded to the location around 11:25 p.m. after a man became ill while waiting in line for the restroom, said Jacki Kelley, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.
Bystanders began CPR before paramedics arrived to take the man to a hospital, but he did not survive, Kelley said.
The man’s death does not appear to be related to a fall or other trauma, but his cause of death will be determined by the coroner’s office, Kelley said.
Band member Scott Avett addressed the audience during Sunday’s show before the band began playing “Through My Prayers,” according to a video on YouTube.
“When we talk to you and say we love you and thank you for coming here, we’re not just talking to a blur of a crowd. We want you to know that we are talking to each and every one of you,” he said.
Avett identified the person who died as a man named Rusty.
“We feel that we are losing one of our own people,” he said.
“We want to send Rusty love, his family love, and dedicate this show and this song to Rusty.”
The coroner’s office could not be reached Wednesday to confirm the man’s identity.
