Teen killed, other injured in shooting at Adam's County Rotella Park

A one-month-old baby who was allegedly left in a car seat in the median of Pecos Street by his parents on Christmas morning was exposed to cocaine, according to an arrest affidavit from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

Jarvis Sims, 42, and Christina Thurman, 33, are charged with child abuse and reckless endangerment after allegedly abandoned their baby near their Sherrelwood apartment.

The baby’s name and gender were taken from the arrest affidavit.

A woman who found the baby told police she saw a couple arguing in the 7400 block of Pecos Street around 8 a.m. and later saw a man walk to the median, put down a car seat and walk away.

The woman walked to the car seat and found a newborn baby wearing a diaper inside. She shouted at the man to come back, to which he replied, “That’s her child, give it to her,” and continued walking away.

Investigators later contacted the baby’s mother, Thurman, who told them she left the apartment she shares with Sims after they argued “about her level of intoxication.”

Thurman told police she called her mother to pick her up and began walking south on Pecos when she saw Sims walking toward her with the baby in a car seat and placed him in the median, but she continued to walk south because she didn’t. want to ‘create more problems’.

Sims told investigators he took the baby outside and yelled at Thurman to get him, but she refused, so he left the baby on the sidewalk and went home because “he had to work in the morning.”

The baby was taken to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Broomfield and appeared healthy, but later tested positive for cocaine, the affidavit said. The child is being cared for and is safe, county officials said last week.

Thurman was released on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on February 7. Sims’ $50,000 bail was later reduced to $2,500, according to court records. He remains in custody and will appear in court on February 7.
