🇪🇸 Early 2025 Clasico
Getty Images
The new year was generous and brought us an extra episode of El Clasico earlier than expected, thanks to the Supercopa de Espana in Saudi Arabia. Real Madrid and Barcelona will renew their bitter rivalry on Sunday, with silverware on the line at King Abdullah Sports City after the Catalan giants defeated Athletic Club and Los Blancos edged past RCD Mallorca to reach the showdown final in Jeddah. Barca won 2-0 against the Basque team on Wednesday, with Gavi influencing the match by scoring the opener and saving the second for Lamine Yamal.
With Dani Olmo and Pau Victor temporarily cleared to play for the Blaugrana again, Hansi Flick’s side will be close to full strength again, but against a determined Blancos side. Real booked their place 24 hours later with a 3–0 success against the Islanders, but all the goals came in the second half, with Jude Bellingham scoring the opener after the hour before a late goal from Martin Valjent was added by Rodrygo. Like Chuck Booth saidThere is no such thing as a friendly match when Carlo Ancelotti’s men meet their biggest rivals.
- Standings at El Clasico: “For something that could be construed as a mid-season showcase, the stakes are always high when these two meet. It’s even more important for Real Madrid, as a Kylian Mbappe goal combined with a win would help cement stating that the Frenchman’s era is the number.” Nine in Madrid is on a roll after a below-average start in Spain. The Clasicos are where legends are made, and that’s especially true when silverware is at stake. Barcelona won their last match 4-0 in October with a brace from Robert Lewandowski, but these are teams that are now in a very different form than when they last met. Barcelona’s defense was suspect and Madrid’s attack is finding its way, which could make this very different.”

🏴ꠁԠԠԠԠԠ EPL coaching carousel
Getty Images
After making just two managerial changes all season until mid-December, the past four weeks have seen four separations in the English Premier League, meaning the coaching carousel is now in full swing. Wolverhampton Wanderers started the trend by replacing Gary O’Neil with Vitor Pereira before Southampton followed suit with Russell Martin making way for Ivan Juric. Graham Potter’s return to the EPL was next when he came on for Julen Lopetegui at West Ham United, but the most notable was Everton’s farewell to Sean Dyche on the day of their FA Cup third round tie with Peterborough United on Thursday.
The Toffees may be different to their rivals Wolves, Saints and Hammers as they have recently been acquired by the Friedkin Group, who have undoubtedly been keen to make their mark on Merseyside as quickly as possible since walking through the doors of Goodison Park. Dyche had been in charge since the start of 2023 and successfully maintained their top-flight status, but a troubled run of form opened up the possibility of an early managerial change and it could see David Moyes make a remarkable return to Everton after managing the club for 11 years until he joined Manchester United in 2013.
“Everton Football Club can confirm that Sean Dyche has been relieved of his duties as manager of the men’s first team with immediate effect,” the spokesperson said. Thursday’s surprisingly timed statement prior to the 2-0 win over the Posh. Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer have also left the club. The process to appoint a new manager is ongoing and an update will be provided in due course. Under-18s head coach Leighton Baines and club captain Seamus Coleman will take charge of first-team affairs on an interim basis.”

💰The Backline
💵 Best bet
- Supercopa de Espana: Real Madrid vs. Barcelona, Sunday, 2:00 PM ET
💰 THE CHOICE: Draw and both to score (+333) — The first edition of El Clasico in 2025 will take place in Saudi Arabia, offering Kylian Mbappe the chance to start the new year by securing silverware for Los Blancos against their great Catalan foes. The French superstar and Carlo Ancelotti’s men have reached top spot in LaLiga and are in good form, while Hansi Flick’s Blaugrana have struggled to find form of late. Can Real beat Barca? A draw in regular time could lead to extra time and penalties and that could be how this decision is decided, so a draw in regular time with both teams scoring sounds good.
