Mary Carey has already decorated its halls, but many other musicians are getting into the spirit of the season this year with original Christmas songs.
Jack AntonoffThe band’s band, Bleachers, released a single titled “Merry Christmas, Please Don’t Call” in November. The producer highlighted the inspiration behind the song in a long story Instagram after.
“’Merry Christmas, please don’t call’ is finally here. it took me a long time to write this. Years,” he wrote. “Those who have heard bits and pieces at shows know the different versions and how the lyrics moved in a more or less hopeful/disturbing way. It can be difficult to tell the story of someone you don’t want around and still find a reason to tell it. Maybe that’s why it took so long to frame. also had to harbor the hope of rearranging his life. hello and good morning here.”
He continued, “So this is for anyone who has come to the realization that someone has attacked them [sic] and has no intention of stopping. something that happened to me a few years ago that wasn’t suitable for a grandstand album…was an island..like a christmas carol. I love how Christmas songs are about hoping that life will be better next time, hoping that your baby will come home for Christmas (or at least New Year’s), hoping that next Christmas you’ll be less on the ground is…. that felt like the place to tell the story. so for anyone trying to drag you down, this is my best chance to close the door on being more intact this christmas. do not call on public holidays [sic] motherf-eh! I love you all!”
In one separate message on the Bleachers account, Antonoff wrote that he was happy to see the song “finally” appear in-universe. ‘Here it is. for anyone who experiences the holidays as a time to get rid of those who have wronged you,” he noted.
When Bleachers joined the Christmas music charts, the news broke Jason Kelce‘s party song with Stevie Nicks“Maybe This Christmas,” dethroned Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” from the No. 1 spot on iTunes.
“You know, I’ve fought my whole life to be the Queen of Christmas,” Jason teased during an episode of his and Travis Kelce‘New Heights’ podcast. “And the fact that we are finally here is just very special.”
