Borderlands is probably the most bizarre film of this year, although it has a strong rival in The Crow. The adaptation of the critically acclaimed first-person shooter franchise should have been a huge success, but it’s a huge disappointment.
In recent years, game adaptations have finally picked up steam – at least when it comes to TV series. Netflix’s Arcane, HBO’s The Last of Us and Prime Video’s Fallout captured the hearts of viewers and critics alike.
On the other hand, films like Uncharted and Mortal Kombat received mixed reviews and were poorly received by gaming fans. It looks like Borderlands is joining their ranks.
All indications are that the messy production process heavily influenced the film and that the Borderlands film is therefore likely to be a flop, despite the big name cast, including Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Lionsgate, the studio behind Borderlands, is trying to recoup some money by quickly introducing the film to home media.
If you are curious when the film can be watched at home, we have what you need.
How to watch Borderlands now
The game adaptation is currently showing in cinemas in the US and UK.
If you want to see Borderlands in cinemas, you can book tickets at the websites of AMC Theaters and Fandango in the US and at Vue, Cineworld, Odeon and Showcase in the UK.
Here is the trailer of the movie:
When will Borderlands be released on VOD?
In the United States, the film is now available on platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. You can rent Borderlands for $19.99 or buy it for $24.99.
Lionsgate has not yet announced when the film will be released on VOD in the UK.
When will Borderlands be released on DVD/Blu-ray?
You can currently pre-order physical copies of Borderlands on Amazon’s website in the US and UK.
The DVD edition costs $24.49 / £9.99, the Blu-Ray costs $24.95 / £14.99, while 4K Ultra HD will set you back $34.49 / £24.99. There’s also a limited edition 4K Steelbook available, priced at $28.93 / £35.00.
However, Lionsgate still hasn’t announced when physical copies of Borderlands will be ready to ship.
The big hit John Wick 4 hit store shelves three weeks after its VOD premiere. Conversely, the equally successful The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was released on DVD and Blu-ray about two months after its digital release.
On the other hand, physical copies of the box office flop The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare arrived two and a half months after reaching Prime Video. Oddly enough, April’s Boy Kills World is still awaiting its DVD and Blu-ray premiere.
Lion’s Gate
Lionsgate may wait the standard time and release the film on DVD and Blu-ray about two and a half months after its VOD release. In that case, physical copies of Borderlands may be available November 2024.
When can Borderlands be released on streaming services?
Lionsgate films typically appear on streaming six months after their theatrical release, just like blockbusters John Wick 4 and The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
If Lionsgate wants to follow this rule for Borderlands, the film could appear on Starz February 2025. The film will later be released on Peacock. But its poor box office performance could mean it arrives sooner.
Starz’s basic subscription costs $8.99 per month or $74.99 per year with a seven-day free trial. You can get the standard, ad-supported Peacock Premium for $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year.
Songbirds & Snakes and John Wick 4 were released on Prime Video in the UK, so Borderlands could also be available on this streaming service around February 2025. An Amazon Prime subscription costs £8.99 per month, but new users can get a 30-day free trial.
