A climber reported missing in the Indian peaks wilderness was found dead on Tuesday, This was reported by the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.
Search and rescue crews began searching for the missing man Tuesday morning after a caller reported an overdue climber in the Lone Eagle Peak area near Crater Lake in the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests.
The man’s planned route came from Brainard Lake to Pawnee Pass, Crater Lake, Lone Eagle Peak, Apache Peak and back to Brainard Lake, sheriff’s officials said in a news release Wednesday.
His body was found by hikers near Lone Eagle Peak around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, but could not be recovered due to weather and the difficulty of reaching the area.
A Colorado Division of Fire Protection and Control helicopter and crew flew out of Cañon City early Wednesday morning and were picked up Rocky Mountain Rescue Group technical rope specialists in Boulder and traveled to the base of Lone Eagle Peak.
Rescue crews recovered the man’s body Wednesday around 1 p.m., sheriff’s officials said. His name will be released by the Grand County Coroner’s Office.
