CNN is expected to unveil significant staff cuts as early as Thursday, according to three people familiar with the matter, as CEO Mark Thompson continues to chart a new emphasis on digital content.
A CNN spokesperson could not be reached for immediate comment. The staff cuts had been expected for weeks, but CNBC reported Wednesday that they were imminent.
There is an understanding that the layoffs will mainly target staffers who they say work off-camera, with some production jobs in New York and Washington DC going to CNN’s facilities in Atlanta. Most anchors at the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlets are expected to be spared.
