Company recalls baby cereal after tests show Cronobacter contamination

A company in Canada is recalling certain baby cereals after government testing revealed Cronobacter contamination.

Baby Gourmet Foods Inc. is recalling its Banana Raisin Oatmeal Organic Whole Grain Baby Cereal, according to a recall notice posted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

At the time the recall notice was posted, there were no confirmed cases of infection from the product. The product was distributed nationally.

The recalled cereal is sold under the Baby Gourmet Organic brand and is sold in 8-ounce packages. The affected product has a UPC number 6 28619 10003 6 and one of the following codes: 24122BROAC G 2 HH:MM BB: 2025AL03; 24121BROAC G 2 HH:MM BB: 2025AL03.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.

The CFIA verifies that the industry is removing recalled products from the market.

Food contaminated with Cronobacter may not look or smell putrid, but it can still make you sick. Although Cronobacter is not typically associated with human disease, it can rarely cause serious or fatal infections. Cronobacter can cause rare infections of the bloodstream and central nervous system and has been associated with serious intestinal infections (necrotizing enterocolitis) and blood poisoning (sepsis), especially in newborns.

Consumers are urged to check their homes for the recalled product and discontinue use immediately.
