“The Substance” co-stars Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley clashed as they played their characters from the body horror film in a playful, controversial way at this year’s Golden Globes on Sunday.
Moore, who joined Qualley at the Golden Globe ceremony for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series – Drama, was quick to question why her co-star was at the ceremony.
Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance,” which earned five nominations for the ceremony, sees Elisabeth Sparkle (played by Moore) taking a black market drug that causes her to create the body of a younger version of herself named Sue (played by Qualley).
The two bodies are expected to exchange consciousness every seven days.
“What do you mean what I’m doing here, Demi?” Qualley asked her co-star.
“This is my week,” Moore replied as she confronted the actor.
“Yeah, but it’s the Golden Globes, so,” Qualley shot back as she looked away from Moore uncomfortably.
“Yes, I know, but you have to respect the balance, remember?” Moore pressed.
The two were both nominated for their roles in the film, which was celebrated for its commentary on aging and women’s bodies.
Moore would ultimately take home the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
In the Globes segment, the two reminded each other that they both deserved nods, causing Qualley to make a face at the camera.

“Okay, we are one, so shall we do this together?” Moore asked.
“What’s the worst that could happen?” Qualley replied as Moore raised her eyebrows, seemingly referring to the movie.
