Dog's Eyes says it all after firefighter saves him from hurricane floods

As recovery efforts continue in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, one particularly sweet selfie stands out.

“Watch this beautiful moment of pure gratitude and love!” wrote the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue in Florida in a Facebook post on Friday.

One photo in the post shows a wet, disheveled dog staring at a firefighter, who is staring at the camera.

“This dog’s eyes say it all when he looks at Cpt. Dusty Mascaro from our HCFR [search and rescue] team after it was made safe,” the post said.

Another photo showed Mascaro carrying the puppy, which appeared to be a Bernese Mountain Dog, in his arms through knee-deep water.

The message did not include details about where the dog was found, and the county fire team did not immediately return a request for comment from JS. In the Facebook post, the agency added that it was “making sure no one – human or animal – was left behind” and had rescued 104 pets so far. Additional photos showed a group of dogs packed into a bus.

Other dramatic animal rescues have gone viral in the wake of Hurricane Milton, which hit Florida on Wednesday.

Florida Highway Troopers posted a video showing the rescue of a dog tied to a fence in rising water along the side of the road north of Tampa. The dog, now named Trooper after his rescuer’s profession, is being cared for by an animal shelter in Florida.

And in Fort Myers, as the rain poured down, so could journalist David Barcenas pry a soaking wet cat loose meowed for help under a car as his colleague Christopher Salas filmed the rescue. Barcelonas told The Washington Post that if it turns out that the cat doesn’t have a ‘loving family who misses her’, he wants to adopt her himself.
