Dr. Emilio Esteban leaves the USDA to take a job at Mérieux Nutrisces as a chief scientific officer for his North -Division and head of her global analytical hub.
President Joe Biden appointed Esteban as sixth under secretary for food safety at the US Department of Agriculture. The post is the highest position of the food safety of the country. Esteban has been working in front of the desk since 2001.
Esteban worked in various roles at the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). From 2018 he held the position of chief scientist at the FSIS.
Before Esteban came to the USDA, Esteban worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer, Personnel Pidemiologist and Assistant Director of the Food Safety Office.
He serves as chairman of the Codex Alimentarius Commission Commission for Food Hygiene. This committee helps to define the standards for food hygiene for international trade. Esteban also works as a vice -president of the International Association for Food Protection.
Esteban trained as a veterinarian in Mexico. He has an MBA, a master’s degree in preventive veterinary medicine and a Ph.D. In epidemiology of the University of California-Davis.
