Ethan Slater‘S ex-wife delves into the end of her marriage… not by shooting Ethan or Ariana Grande – but instead by apologizing to her therapy patients for no longer living anonymous lives.
Lilly Jay – a clinical psychologist and high school sweetheart of Broadway star Slater – wrote an essay, published on The cut Everything about the public nature of her breakup on Thursday.
In the essay, Lilly laments that she is now a spectacle in the public eye, despite being in a profession where patients are better served if they do not acknowledge their therapist’s personal life.
She compares it to when she was pregnant with her healthy child, talking to women whose own children faced life-threatening complications. Although she didn’t hide her pregnant belly, none of her patients mentioned the pregnancy… creating a distance between the sessions and the reality outside.

Jay writes that this rift with Slater is much the same… with patients not acknowledging her very public divorce – though she is constantly dragged into grief at the sight of endless promotion for ‘Wicked’ – Slater met Grande during the production of the film.
Worth noting: She never specifically mentions Ariana, and she doesn’t attack her or her own ex-husband. In fact, she compliments Slater, noting that their romantic relationship is over, but commends him for his 100% commitment to raising their son.
That said, Lilly admits that motherhood “fills your time, but it doesn’t fill your mind”… so while she tackles monotonous tasks like rocking the baby or pushing his stroller, she’s had time to reflect thinking about her failed marriage.
As you know… Grande and Slater both left their spouses after meeting on the set of “Wicked” – and they both finalized their divorce earlier this year, months later. moving in together in NYC.
In the wake of the split news, LJ told Us, “I’m focused on my son and doing my best to navigate a spotlight I’ve never wanted or experienced before” — adding that she needed privacy to properly navigate the issue to navigate.
Despite the breakup, Jay writes in her essay that she no longer has a future with her high school sweetheart… but she expects “a life full of sweetness waiting for me and my child.”
