Fresh vibrations shake top Greek tourist island of Santorini

Athens:

Fresh overnight stays vibrations shake Greece’s best tourist island of Santorini, said media reports on Monday, who encourage people to sleep outside and others to leave by plane or ferry.

More than 200 small earthquakes were absorbed at sea or on the surrounding islands, with the strongest – from Magnitude 4.6 – that struck the waters between Santorini and Amorgos on Sunday afternoon.

An earthquake with 4.2-magnitude was recorded at 7.10 am (0510 GMT) on Monday northwest of the small island of Anafi, near Santorini, the Institute for Geodynamics of the National Observatory of Athens.

Ethymios Lekkas, the president of the organization of Antisermic planning and protection, told ERT Public Broadcaster on Monday that there was a “weak possibility of an earthquake of 5.5 magnitude”, but closed one with more than six.

Greek media said that different people spent the night outdoors, either in their cars or areas that the authorities referred to safe.

Many left the island on flights or ferries, according to Media reports.

Schools on the island of approximately 15,500 were closed on Monday.

Greek authorities have asked people to avoid large meetings in closed spaces and stay away from certain ports, dilapidated buildings and empty swimming pools.

Santorini welcomed 3.4 million visitors in 2023 and released concern about openerism.
