Party promoter Billy McFarland is back at Fyre Festival 2. To take place in Isla Mujeres, Mexico from 30 May to 2 June, tickets have just been on sale, ranging from $ 1,400 to a really brutal $ 1.1 million – although there there no artists have been confirmed, and McFarland itself is not sure if he can leave the country legally to be present, like him told The Today Show Monday morning.
It is certainly unexpected. In 2017, McFarland brought a hugely successful viral campaign for the Fyre Festival, which promised an ultra-luxury music event in the Bahamas. Influencers flowed to promote it, but when guests arrived, they found Fema -tent, Sad Cheese sandwiches and no running water. The debacle became a decisive moment of the influencer culture that had gone wrong on Instagram. (Lost in the Mayhem was the original goal of Fyre Festival: promoting Fyre MediaMcFarland’s ‘Uber for the Performing Arts’, a platform that connects event organizers with musicians.)
The incompetence of McFarland ended up in prison for fraud, and although the conditions of his 2022 release could prevent him from traveling internationally, don’t be shocked when people buy what he sells again. Marketing can overcome a lot, with people who like to be part of a movement, even if this means that it is burned twice.
