Gary Lineker will leave BBC’s ‘Match of the Day’ at the end of the season

Gary Lineker leaves BBC’s flagship football series ‘Match of the Day’ BBC news reports.

Lineker, the broadcaster’s highest-paid presenter who has presented the show since 1999, will retire after the end of this season in May 2025. An official announcement is expected to be made on Tuesday, according to BBC News.

British tabloid The Sun, which first reported the news, also said Lineker will leave the BBC all together after major coverage of the 2026 World Cup.

Representatives for the BBC and Lineker did not immediately respond Variety‘s request for comment.

News of Lineker’s departure comes after reports last month that he had entered new contract negotiations with the BBC.
