Google has made an AI model to talk to dolphins

A new AI system with a large language model can soon allow people with dolphins to convers. Planned to debut in the coming months, researchers will test to see if Dolphingemma And his accompanying Cetacean hearing augmentation telemetry (chat) system can translate and simulate some of its own complex vocalizations of the mammalian. If successful, the breakthrough can represent the peak of more than four decades of work, documentation and conservation efforts.

Dolphins are some of the smartest and most communicative animals of the earth. Their social interactions are so complex that researchers of the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP) have tried to decipher them in the last 40 years. In the process, WDP has collected for decades of underwater audio and video that documents a single community of Atlantic Spot Dolphins in the Bahamas. In the process they have been able to correlate sounds with behavioral aspects such as courtships, unique names and dolphin wraps.

Experts have long been theoretized that it is possible that people actually communicate with the cetaceans, but lacked technology that is advanced enough to pars and mimic the underwater whistles, clicks and pulses of the species. With the rise of large language models (LLMS), researchers recently wondered whether the same principles that underlie LLMs could be applied on dolphin interactions. To test this possibility, WDP recently worked together with Google and the Georgia Institute of Technology, with engineers of a huge, labeled data set of dolphin fluits, clicks and pulses for use in LLM training.

The result is DolphingemmaAn AI model built with the same technology that manages Google’s Gemini systems. Dolphingemma is designed on around 400 million parameters to essentially function in the same way as predictive LLMs such as Chatgpt – but for dolphins.

Dolphingemma first receives and interprets audio inputs and then probably predicts later sounds for recreation. It then works together with the chat system that is installed on adapted Google Pixel smartphones. Chat is not designed to fully translate the natural language of a dolphin, but to help people transfer and set up a more simplified, shared vocabulary. The plan is to learn apparently members from the Atlantic Speceded Dolphin community of the WDP a series of synthetic whistles with their favorite objects such as Seegrass, Sargassum and even the scarves of researchers. Over time, experts hope that the dolphins will even learn to ask for desired items when they want to play.

There is still a lot of work to do before people and dolphins bridge the interspecies communication gorge. But with this creative use of LLMS, those underwater conversations are one step closer.
