In a surprise announcement, Google has unveiled the Google TV Streamer and discontinued the Chromecast line.
While it looks like a decent set-top box streamer with a lot of good features, I think Google missed a trick here.
Unlike its Chromecast-branded predecessors, the Google TV Streamer is designed to be seen. It’s not an HDMI dongle hidden behind your TV.
Google describes the device as having a “beautiful design that will complement any decor,” which is similar to the line used to promote previous smart home products including Nest devices.
I’m inclined to agree, although more colors than just Obsidian and Hazel would be welcome. The design looks much nicer than square rivals like the Apple TV 4K, but there’s a problem.
When I first saw the Google TV Streamer, I thought “that’s genius,” assuming the design had a built-in wireless charger.
Unfortunately that is not the case. But as far as I’m concerned, it really should be.
Wireless charging is no longer limited to flagship phones these days, but can be found on cheaper handsets, as well as various other devices such as wireless earbuds and smart ring charging cases.
I have wireless chargers all over the house, on my nightstand and on my desk, but none in the living room.
Having it on the Google TV Streamer would be a real boon and an extra reason to buy one, even if it might push the cost beyond the £99/$99 price point. Or Google could offer models with and without.
It’s a shame and a missed trick. If I purchase a Google TV Streamer, despite its attractive design, it will undoubtedly be tucked away among all the other things connected to my TV.
