⚽ Good morning to everyone, but especially to…
USMNT SUPPORTERS
Gregg Berhalter is off as the United States Men’s National Team coach after a brutally disappointing performance in the Copa America and two years before the United States co-hosted the 2026 World Cup.
I hate to celebrate a dismissal – these are real people with real human emotions, after all – but I believe this was the right move, and most fellow USMNT supporters seem to agree. The United States has more talent than ever, but has rarely achieved the results to match. During Berhalter’s two-term term, which stretched back to late 2018 (full timeline here), the Stars and Stripes managed just five wins over top-20 opponents, four of which came against them Mexico.
The failure of the Copa America – the first time the USMNT failed to emerge from a competition it hosted And the first time a host failed to advance out of the group stage of the tournament sealed its fate. Berhalter took the blame in a statement after his discharge.
He hardly deserves all the blame — Tim WeaThe USMNT’s foolish red card was a disaster, but the USMNT has been stagnant since the 2022 World Cup, and this was the right choicewrites Pardeep Cattry.
- Cattry: “The last ten months of work have essentially erased the undeniable strides the team made during his first three years in the role. The head coach’s second stint in charge, which began last September after his original contract expired at the end of 2022 , demonstrated the stark The difference between starting from scratch and reaching the next level There was little Berhalter could do to take his team to the next gear and long before their failure at the Copa America, the cracks began to show.
The USMNT has two years to right the ship, and it is a ship that can (and should) be righted.
- Christian Pulisic is having his best season in one of the best leagues in the world.
- The same applies to Weston McKennie. A midfield that also includes McKennie, the super talented Gio Reyna and workhorses Tyler Adams And Yunus Musah is tempting.
- Folarin Balogun is the most promising young forward the USMNT has had in recent history.
- There are questions about the defense, but the tough left back Antonee Robinson is not one of them.
Just now How How good those pieces are is up for debate, but under Berhalter this “golden generation” too often produced boring results, and every step forward was accompanied by two steps back.
Now the same group that rehired Berhalter a year ago has gone through a monumental process. Big, big names are being discussed, and they’re all involved our long list of potential Berhalter replacements.

DARWIN NUÑEZ AND URUGUAY
Losing is never good, but losing and entering the crowd, Malice-at-the-Palace style, is about as disgusting as it gets. After falling to 10 men Colombia1-0, in the semi-final of the Copa America, Uruguay players, incl Liverpool star Darwin Nuñez (seen at the bottom center of the photo) went into the stands and fought with fanswhich is a shocking, ugly ending to a disappointing evening in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Fans of both teams were already working on it: Uruguay’s José Giménez says players’ “families are in danger” and that there were no police officers to ward off rowdy Colombian supporters – when Nuñez and other players were hit with drinks. The video pretty much speaks for itself.
The game itself was also very wild. Jefferson Lerma scored a header shortly before Daniel Munoz was sent off for hitting an opponent with an elbow. Despite the man advantage, Uruguay could not find an equalizer.
Colombia will be confronted Argentina in the finals in Miami on Sunday night. Uruguay will be confronted Canada in the third-place game in Charlotte Saturday night.
👎 Not so honorable mentions
- Kawhi Leonard withdrew by Team USA and was replaced by Dirk White.
- Jontay Porter pleaded guilty to wire fraud after his gambling scandal and lifetime ban from the NBA.
- The Evaders demoted wrestling Bobby Miller.
🏀 Team USA defeats Canada in pre-Olympic showcase

After a slow start, Team USA pulled past a talented one Canada team, 86-72, in his first pre-Olympic showcase game.
Anthony Edwards made headlines when he said he is the No. 1 option in a team full, but he looked good. The Timber wolves The star was crucial in turning the game around for the US, finishing with a team-high 13 points, providing a jolt to an otherwise sleepy start. Anthony Davis added 10 points and 11 rebounds and four blocks for good measure. When you can get those two off the bench, you know you’re absolutely stacked.
Sam Quinn says Edwards will play a crucial role in Paris.
- Quinn: “Jrue holiday started next to Booker in this game, and his skills as a role player might make more sense next to those MVPs. But every time Kerr tries to turn Edwards into a role player, an even more dangerous star emerges. Even if Holiday makes more stylistic sense in the starting five, Edwards may be too talented to deny.”
⚽ England into Euro 2024 final after another late goal

If it wasn’t for a late goal almost two weeks ago, England would have disappeared from the eurozone much sooner than expected and would be confronted with enormous, diverse questions. Thanks to another late goal, they now go further than ever before. The Three Lions are in their first international final away from home after a 2-1 win over the The Netherlands. Replacement Ollie Watkins scored the game winner after a spot-on strike in the 91st minute.
- Xavi Simons — A breakout star of the tournament — opened the scoring with an absolute stunner in the seventh minute.
- But England replied in controversial fashion shortly afterwards. Harry Kane missed a good chance, but was contacted late Denzel Dumfries. After a video review, England were awarded a penalty and Kane made no mistake. Yet James Benge says England are the all-time top scorer should be dropped from the line-up in the final.
- Both teams created great chances, but it was the English substitutes who took advantage of them. Cole Palmer slid through Watkins, and the Aston Villa The man expertly turned and shot from an acute angle to the opposite corner, which was by all accounts a beautiful finish.
England will be confronted Spain on the last Sunday afternoon.
⚾ MLB Trade Deadline: Who’s Buying, Who’s Selling?
Getty Images
As the MLB trade deadline approaches at the end of the month, clear buyers and sellers have emerged. But a lot can change between now and then.
So Matt Snyder went through all 30 teams, splitting them into six categories:
- Clear sellers
- Clear buyers
- Trending towards sellers
- Trending towards buyers
- It can really go either way
- Delay?
The penultimate category has only one team.
- Snyder: “Mets – With a new front office boss David Sterns in addition to possible rental players such as Pete Alonso, Jose Quintana, Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, JD Martinez, Harrison Bader And Adam Ottavino — not to mention players under surveillance until 2025, like Starling Marte — the Mets entered the season looking like the biggest seller around. …They could completely take over the seller’s market if they lose enough to fall out of contention. They may also get hot again and decide to spend a lot of money taking on tradable contracts from other teams.”
This is an excellent look at what’s to come.
🏀 WNBA Midseason Awards, ‘Camp Days’ Takeaways

As a child I loved summer camp. And as an adult, I love what the WNBA is doing with summer camps. On Wednesday “Camp Day,” the WNBA spread five games throughout the day to give campers a chance to attend, and what a day it was. Jack Maloney does full takeawaysand one of the highlights was…
- The Freedom at the top of the Sun to take over first place in the standings.
- Aja Wilson scored 24 points and 20 rebounds.
- Caitlin Clark completed the statistics sheet historical fashion while Angel Reese kept her record-breaking double-double streak alive. While their rivalry dates back to college, Reese does excited to work together on the All-Star Game.
Those last two points fit perfectly with Jack’s mid-season price choices. Wilson is the runaway MVP favorite while Clark and Reese battle for Rookie of the Year. For now, Jack is going with…
- Maloney: “Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, was an offensive dynamo… She leads all rookies in scoring, assists (also second in the league in that category) and three-pointers, is on pace to become the fourth player and first rookie, with a 15/5/5 season and recently became the first rookie ever to record a triple-double.”
Jacs in-depth look at Clark’s offensive excellence is a must read.
