French free-to-air children’s channel Gulli has given Watch Next the green light to begin production on “Wild Kat,” a new tween action series co-developed by M6 Group and Germany’s Super RTL.
Created and developed in-house at Watch Next, “Wild Kat” will combine fantasy and adventure themes with high-stakes humor and action to appeal to a tweener audience and touch on themes important to them, such as identity and self-acceptance. Season 1 contains 26 episodes of 22 minutes.
“Wild Kat” takes place in a world like ours; only a few individuals are gifted with the ability to transform into hybrid beings known as Werelings. The show’s protagonist, Kat, is one such person, and she works with her companions, Idris and Dimitri, to prevent others from abusing their transformations for evil purposes. As if that pressure isn’t enough, Kat is also adjusting to life in high school, one of the most impactful stages in any young person’s life.
“With ‘Wild Kat’ we wanted to create an action-packed series with spectacular fights that still captures the emotions of the characters,” said Sylvain Huchet, producer and co-creator of the series, and Jérémy Guiter, director and co-creator. -Creator. “Kat and her friends are not superheroes, but teenagers facing age-related challenges, especially those around identity and difference. It is this sensitivity and immersive quality that makes the series unique and, we believe, resonates with young audiences.”
The series was developed with financial support from Creative Europe Media, CNC, Sofitvcine, Procirep and Angoa.
Founded in 2015, Watch Next has quickly established itself as a company to watch on the French animation scene. Recent notable titles at the company include Jérémie Périn’s sci-fi Annecy adult competition film “Mars Express” – co-produced by Je Suis Bien Content and Everybody on Deck – the hugely popular children’s series “Nate is Late” and mega IP adaptation “Hello Kitty: Super style.”
