Harris will deliver closing messages at the site of Trump's Jan. 6 speech

Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver the closing message of her presidential campaign on October 29 at the site where Donald Trump incited the riot at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 after losing the 2020 election to Joe Biden.

A senior Harris campaign official said the choice of the Ellipse, the circular park just south of the White House, is intended to contrast Harris’ vision for a first term with Trump’s for a second.

The site suggests Harris will make democracy the overarching theme of her closing speech. Trump has not announced whether he will make a similarly major speech to conclude his third presidential campaign.

The Ellipse was where Trump called on his supporters to march to the Capitol as Congress certified the results of the 2020 election. The violent attack resulted in five deathsincluding one of Trump’s own supporters.

Harris has returned to the themes of democracy and Trump’s authoritarian tendencies to court disaffected Republican voters. The vice president has recently campaigned in swing states with former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, who led the Jan. 6 investigation into Trump and who lost her seat in Congress after breaking with Trump.

Four years after the January 6 riot, Harris returns to the Ellipse for a major speech to close out her campaign.

Dozens of Trump White House employees have also broken with Trump and said they will not vote for him again because of the threat he poses to the rule of law. Harris responded Wednesday to this week’s reporting that Trump’s longest-serving chief of staff, John Kelly, believes he meets the definition of a ‘fascist’. Kelly also revealed in comments to The New York Times and The Atlantic that Trump privately praised Nazi leader Adolf Hitler for doing “some good things.”

Harris told reporters on Wednesday that it is “deeply disturbing and incredibly dangerous that Donald Trump would invoke Adolf Hitler, the man responsible for the deaths of six million Jews and hundreds of thousands of Americans.”

She added: “We know what Donald Trump wants. He wants unchecked power.”
