‘She was an intensely private person and was ultimately with friends and family.
“She is survived by two sons and five loving grandchildren, who are devastated by the loss of their special mother and grandmother.”
Her family continued: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and continued kindness during her final days.
“We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”
Following the news of Smith’s passing, tributes poured in, with fans and fellow actors alike rushing to social media to remember the legend best known for her roles as Professor Minerva McGonagall and Violet Crawley in Harry Potter And Downton Abbey.
Hugh Bonneville, who co-starred with Smith Downton Abbeysaid: “Anyone who has ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her keen eyes, sharp wit and formidable talent.
“She was a true legend of her generation and will happily live on in so many wonderful film performances. My condolences to her boys and the wider family.”
