Here's what the $15,000 Kohler X Remedy Place Ice Bath gets you
MAbove that, an aluminum container full of hose water and ice. There’s a new cold snap in town, and so is she fashionable. In fact, she’s the fanciest bathtub we’ve ever seen, and also the most expensive. On Tuesday Kohler and the wellness club Remedy in place announced the launch of an ice bath that will set customers back $15,000.

The “KOHLER x Remedy Place Ice Bath” is not shipping yet. Currently, customers can only register for a pre-order, after which you will receive a call from a Kohler salesperson and a pair of Remedy Place x Kohler ice bath socks.

For what essentially amounts to a container of cold water, at-home ice baths can be surprisingly expensive: other luxury offerings with sleek wood designs, temperature controls, and filtration systems can cost thousands of dollars. But none have broken the $10,000+ seal like this collaboration. So what does all that money get you?

We admit: it looks pretty sick. The size of a high-walled bathtub, warm brown wood finish, matte black detailing and bottom-lit LEDs will fit into the modern spa scheme of any single-family home, whether indoors or outdoors, as the cold plunge suits both spaces.

It is “ergonomically” designed with an upright seating position, headrest and hand grooves to make you feel as comfortable as possible while diving in the cold. You can (of course) adjust your temperature (from 39 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit) and filtration settings on a built-in panel, and there’s a mechanism to connect the tub to your home’s water source. Like a self-contained hot tub, you don’t need to drain and refill the water; the water is continuously pumped through a filter and UV cleaning.

The chiller is turned on as necessary to maintain the set temperature. The tub itself is also insulated and comes with an all-weather insulated spa cover to maintain the water temperature.

There’s also a timer, a “breathing light” meant to guide your sessions, and a groove meant for a smartphone or tablet. Ideally, that device will play the ice bath companion app with guided meditations and ice bath coaching videos from the founder of Remedy Place Jonathan Learydoctor of chiropractic and alternative medicine.

Cold divers have become a staple in recovery clubs and wellness areas. Some older research1 supports that they can provide physical and mental benefits, from stimulating blood flow which aids recovery, to reducing stress (and cortisol levels) by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. However, other studies2 can’t find the evidence to support these claims, and some say health experts the evidence is generally quite thin.

There’s also the fact that you don’t necessarily need a specific cold plunge pool to immerse yourself in cold water. You can potentially achieve the same effects by standing in a cold shower for as long as you can tolerate.

But Kohler’s cold plunge is in good company when it comes to introducing high-tech spa treatments with minimal evidence to support their supposed at-home benefits. Today, wellness treatment enthusiasts can purchase infrared saunas, PEMF mats, lymphatic drainage stimulators and more big, expensive gadgets to equip these recovery areas in the home. If you’ve got the money, not to mention the space, then the Kohler x Remedy Place collaboration will definitely fit the bill.
