Huawei’s new smartwatches have arrived, and this year there are plenty to choose from. Huawei updates its GT Pro series biannually, so while we got the Watch GT4 in 2023, in 2024 there’s the Watch GT5 and the Watch GT5 Pro to choose between.
To make matters even more confusing, there are smaller and larger versions of each model, each with a drastically different design, let alone the variety of colors and different straps to get your head around.
If you like the look of these new wearables but are having a hard time deciding which one to buy, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll tell you all the differences so you can get a watch that perfectly suits your needs.
Huawei has just launched six new smartwatches
Design and construction
The Huawei Watch GT5 is available in sizes 41 or 46 mm, and the Huawei Watch GT5 Pro is available in sizes 42 and 46 mm. Each model has its own unique style and is available in different finishes to suit different tastes.
The smaller watches both have a more feminine aesthetic, which some people will certainly prefer, but the larger models have a very different and more masculine design.
It’s not like the Google Pixel Watch 3 or Apple Watch Series 10, where they’re just the same but different sizes. At a glance you probably wouldn’t think they are part of the same series, but the features remain largely the same across formats.

All options are beautifully designed, but style is subjective and only you can decide which model you think looks best. Besides the appearance, the main difference between the GT5 and the Pro are the materials used.
The 46mm GT5 Pro is made with aerospace-grade titanium alloy, which is used throughout the bezel and body. It makes the watch slightly lighter and also super strong and corrosion resistant.
If you opt for the 42mm model, the watch is made from a special nanoceramic material, with gold or silver accents incorporating a similar titanium alloy. Both sizes also use highly scratch-resistant sapphire glass coatings over the screen.
The standard GT5 watches have a more typical smartwatch construction. Both the 41 and 46mm models are made of stainless steel and use a molecular fiber composite rear housing. Huawei hasn’t specified which glass is used to cover the screen, but it’s not sapphire, so it’s likely more prone to smudges.
Health and fitness tracking
Both the Pro and non-Pro GT5 watches benefit from Huawei’s new TruSense system, with faster and more accurate tracking of health metrics than previous models, and both have a ton of activity modes to track. The list includes everything from running and cycling to more niche activities like horse riding and skydiving.
However, if you choose the GT5 Pro, you get access to some additional modes. The most versatile is the new wave mode. It supports 15,000 different golf courses around the world and gives you direct access to a 3D map of the course on your wrist.

It can accurately measure your distance to the green, track wind speed and direction, and even takes elevation changes into account. It can also track your swings, recommend clubs and keep score. If you’re an avid golfer, this is one of the most complete smartwatches in its price range, and it’s almost certainly worth the extra outlay.
The GT5 Pro also allows you to import offline maps and routes with topographic data for trail running. It can be used to navigate while underway and estimates elevation changes, terrain difficulty and finishing times.
If that’s not adventurous enough, the GT5 Pro also has a freediving mode. The water resistance depth has been increased to 40 meters and the display remains clear and visible under such conditions. It tracks everything from your dive time to your depth and more.

With the GT5 Pro you can also take an ECG anytime, anywhere at the touch of a button. While the GT5 just offers basic heart rate monitoring, so if you’re serious about your heart health, you might want to consider opting for the Pro.
Battery life
Surprisingly, there is no difference in battery life between the GT5 and the GT5 Pro. The difference is in the size of watch you choose.
The 46mm models offer a battery life of up to 14 days on a charge or 9 days with normal use. The 41/42mm models have less room for a battery and only offer a maximum battery life of 7 days or 5 days with normal use.
In all cases, they charge with a magnetic puck and take about an hour to go from empty to full.
Prices and verdict
Of course, price will always be a big factor when choosing your next smartwatch, and as you’d expect the GT5 Pro costs more than the GT5.
Huawei Watch GT5 models start from £229.99, while GT5 Pro models start at £329.99. Both can be ordered from Huawei UK’s website (with a free pair of FreeBuds 5i earbuds until October 22) and from Amazon, Curries And Argos and as usual, neither is for sale in the US.
Which one you should buy all depends on your needs and your design taste.
If you’re a golfer, trail runner, or freediver, the extra tracking capabilities are probably worth the extra cost. For everyone else, you won’t lose much if you choose the GT5, and you’ll save yourself a ton of change. However, there is certainly something attractive about that beautiful titanium finish.
