The Philadelphia Eagles defending Tackle Jalen Carter #98, here considering Matthew Stafford #9 of … [+]
You could say that the Philadelphia Eagles have a sick team, but not in a good way in this case. Eagles Offensive Tackle Lane Johnson told the The Philadelphia Inquirer That four to five of his teammates fight against the flu or flu -like disease. This includes Pro Bowl defensive Tackle Jalen Carter who missed the practice, but returned on Thursday. Now the big question is how many of the Eagles players are ready to play on Sundays, which is by the way when the Eagles will do something important for them. They compete against the chiefs of Kansas City in New Orleans for Super Bowl Lix.
Well, the answer depends on whether each of the players has had flu or not. A number of other pathogens such as adenoviruses and respiratory syncytial viruses can cause flu -like diseases. The only way to say if you really have the flu is to be tested. That is when you check a liquid sample from your nose or throat on certain proteins found on the surface of flu viruses (antigen tests) or genetic material of influenzas viruses (molecular tests.)
Those who were actually infected with an influenza A or B virus probably went through at least part of the following typical timeline for the flu:
- Incubation time: This is the time of exposure to the virus until just before the person becomes contagious. This takes an average of two days, but can vary from one to four days. During this time the virus enters the airways cells of a person and then hijack the machines of the cells to make many, many, many copies of themselves.
- Contagious period: After all these copies of the virus have been made, they eventually burst out of the respiratory tract cells, which then start the infectious period. That is when the person is contagious, able to send the virus to others. This infectious period can take up to a week.
- Symptomatic period: This is when the person has symptoms of flu and overlaps with the infectious period. Common symptoms are fever, coughing, sore throat, body arms, chills, fatigue and feelings. The symptomatic period takes the tendency of three to seven days.
- Recovery period: This is when the person is no longer contagious and no longer has serious symptoms. However, some symptoms can continue to exist. For example, the person may not have the same energy level, which would be relevant to the Super Bowl. The recovery period can take up to a week, so that the person does not feel completely good for two weeks after the start of the symptoms.
Now there are cases where flu symptoms are so serious that the person has to be admitted to the hospital. In fact, the flu could even become about life threatening. This is much more likely in people with a weaker immune system such as young children, adults older than 65 and people with chronic medical conditions. Finally, I have checked or none of the Eagles are young children or older than 65 years. But that does not mean that young healthy adults are completely immune to bad flu results.
Having flu is not as if you have a cold. Even if you don’t get sick to solve in the hospital, it can touch you like a Khalil Mack truck. That is why it is possible that the flu virus could eventually play a crucial role in Super Bowl Lix.
With the US now in the middle of the flu season, both the Eagles and the Chiefs would be wise to take appropriate precautions. Some members of the Eagles organization have worn face masks, and not the kind that is normally found for football helmets.
