Jacobus Van Der Beek got choked up as he praised his wife’s support during his battle with colorectal cancer… adding that he hoped to look back on his health journey in the future and be grateful for what he’s been through.
On Tuesday’s “Good Morning America,” James shared that he had to put himself in a position to ask for and accept help for the first time, which turned out to be a blessing — especially since his wife Kim showed him what unconditional love really is.
James noted that his entire family has stepped up and helped them all get stronger… even though his six children call his diagnosis “butt cancer” — and, for the record, he hopes they’ll stop using that nickname.
As for the moment he was told about his diagnosis in August 2023, James said it was a shock because he was in great shape – but quickly realized his life trajectory needed to change so he could look back in 30 years and be grateful for the health challenge.
Overall he stays positive and manages to keep it together 90% of the time. The remaining 10%? He’s a sobbing, terrified mess, but right now he’s physically feeling good and ready to keep fighting.
