The National Women’s Soccer League has a new record holder for single-season scoring. Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga scored her 19th goal of the season, a match-winner, on the road against Bay FC at PayPal Park on Saturday evening. The Malawian international broke the 2019 regular season record of 18 goals in a single season, held by former Chicago Red Stars striker and Australian international Sam Kerr.
Chawinga has had remarkable performances during her first year in the NWSL. She signed with Kansas City in the offseason and scored against 12 different NWSL clubs. She has become a difficult target for opponents, often beating players in defensive positions, whether it be during effective counter-pressing or by using their momentum against them. She’s a nightmare to lock up.

“[It] means a lot to me because it is a very difficult competition, but I am doing my best and I have to work hard to score goals,” Chawinga said in the comments after the match. “So I thank my teammates and I thank God for allowing me this has given. opportunity to be here in the U.S. (and) play here.”
She equaled the season record last week with a goal against Racing Lousiville FC just two minutes into the match. When Kansas City Current hosts San Diego Wave FC at home next week at CPKC Stadium, they will have a chance to set another record: scoring against all 13 opposing teams in a single season.
