I have always been skeptical about people who use ‘national security’ as a justification for various repressive policy measures, including the confidentiality of the government, commercial barriers, the military design, censorship and even overlooks.
That does not mean that national security is never a valid care – I would not argue for the release of nuclear weapon secrets – instead of the concept being used too much, often as a way to achieve other more dubious objectives, such as mercantilism and authoritarianism.
A ‘tell’ that national security is used too much as an excuse for confidentiality is that even top officials do not take the concept seriously. While Edward Snowden remains in exile to expose US government crimesTop officials from both parties routinely national security laws, without legal consequences. Most people are familiar with Clinton’s e-mails and Trump’s bathroom full of documents, but there are many other such cases that can be cited, including previous slip-ups Pete Hegseeth.
A recent example took place with the signal chat leaks to Jeffrey Goldberg van The Atlantic Ocean. I predict that none of the people responsible for leaking American military secrets will eventually go to prison. They are not “small people”.
Just like with Watergate, the cover-up is often worse than crime. The administration initially denied that the leak contained classified information such as war plans or specific weapon systems. The Atlantic Ocean Subsequently, if the government did not consider this information as classified, there was no reason not to publish the entire signal chat. It pale Those best government officials lie against the press and the congress.
When I was young, government officials should resign after a fiasco as a signalgate. Indeed, when I was young, a clearly unqualified cable news reporter would never be appointed Minister of Defense, or confirmed by the Senate. That America is long gone. (Pete Hegseeth once suggested that Hillary Clinton should have been prosecuted for a much less small vulnerability.)
Nowadays another series of rules applies to the rich and celebrities. Blue Collar types go to prison for violating prostitution. The rich and famous purchase of sexual favors with diamond bracelets and chic dinners. Blue-collar species go to prison for breaking drug laws. Rich and famous addicts go to rehabilitation.
Ps. Older readers may remember Leona Helmsley who say:
We do not pay taxes; Only the small people pay taxes.
In fact, the rich pay a lot of taxes; It is the criminal justice system where they have a huge advantage.
Pps. There was an interesting matter here in Orange County, where a 71-year-old judge shot his wife after a fight, admitted to the crime and even said that he earned to be convicted by a jury, and the jury still couldn’t reach a judgment. Here is the OC register:
A year and a half after Judge Jeffrey Ferguson of the Supreme Court, while he was in a police station, he said aloud to himself: “I killed her. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, condemn my ass. I did it”, “” the actual jury charged with determining his destiny It was announced that they were recorded during the age of ninth, which lasted longer than the process itself.
Imagine the same series of facts for a poor person. You could say, “It’s complicated”. Has there ever been a crime of passion that was not? Even black defendants get a break when they are rich and famous, as we saw in the OJ Simpson case.
