After being left out of the squad for a while a second game in a rowthe saga continues for Marcus Rashford and Manchester United. The 27-year-old forward has been ruled out of the Red Devils’ EFL Cup tie as they face Tottenham for a place in the last four of the tournament. The match is scheduled for Thursday at 3pm ET and you can watch it Biggest+.
Rasmus Hojlund will take charge, while Joshua Zirkzee will take the bench. Alejandro Garnacho – who also missed the Manchester derby win due to a coach’s decision – has returned to the squad and will start the match on the bench. Rashford has expressed his desire for a new challenge, fueling speculation he could leave in January.
“This kind of club needs great talent and he is a great talent, so he just has to perform at the highest level and that is my focus,” manager Ruben Amorim said before the match. “I just want to help Marcus.”
Asked about Rashford’s desire for a new challengehe added: “I think it is good. We have a new challenge here. It is a difficult one. For me it is the biggest challenge in football because we are in a difficult situation and I already said that this is one of the biggest clubs in the world.” I really hope that all my players are ready for this new challenge.”
That he hopes his players are ready for the new challenge is what will be interesting for Rashford as the winter transfer window opens soon. Only time will tell if this is a moment he can bounce back from or the beginning of the end of the United Academy players’ time at Old Trafford.
If United decide to move on in January, they could face struggle as Rashford currently earns around $400,000 per week. Without eating some of that salary or seeing Rashford take a pay cut, options may be scarce on the open market, but for now Amorim is finding ways to win without the forward.
