Former first lady Melania Trump advocates for abortion rights in her upcoming memoir, according to The Guardian: who obtained a copy of the book before its release on Tuesday.
“It is imperative to ensure that women have autonomy in deciding their preference for childbearing, based on their own beliefs, free from any government intervention or pressure,” she wrote in her memoir, “Melania .”
“Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right to individual freedom over her own life gives her the power to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes,” she added. “Limiting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is like denying her control over her own body. I have carried this belief with me my entire adult life.”
Her position differs from that of her husband, former President Donald Trump, who has said women should be punished for having abortions if they become illegal.

In her memoir, Melania Trump acknowledges that she and her husband have “occasional political disagreements,” but that she prefers to remain private about those disagreements, according to The Guardian’s account of the book.
The former president has bragged about his role in the 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that established a national right to abortion, thanks to his appointment of three conservative justices.
Furthermore, Project 2025 lays the foundation for several anti-abortion policy proposals. (Trump has tried to distance himself from the Heritage Foundation’s 900-page right-wing blueprint for a second term, but at least 140 people from his previous administration were involved in its creation.)
However, he claimed for the first time on Tuesday that he would veto a national abortion ban after going back and forth on the topic of reproductive rights.
