A dairy products in Middlefield, Oh, remembers his chocolate milk due to a lack of good pasteurization.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture reported on March 26 that it had discovered that Old Country Creamery had wrongly pasteurized the milk. The affected chocolate milk includes all pints, quartz, half gallons and gallons with code data from 04/06/25 and 13-4-15.
The milk was spread over 15 stores within 25 miles of midfield.
The incorrect pasteurization was discovered during a regulatory assessment of pasteurization records by the OHIO Department of Agriculture.
“This quality problem is isolated for whole chocolate milk with expiry dates of 04/06/25 and 13/04/25,” the department said in a press release.
There have been no reports of illness with regard to the recalled milk. However, the Department has advised that anyone who has experienced symptoms of disease transferred by food after consuming the milk must contact a doctor immediately.
Symptoms can be diarrhea, abdominal cramps and vomiting. In some cases, more serious results such as Guillain-Barré syndrome or hemolytic uremic syndrome may occur.
Consumers who have purchased the affected milk must return to the place of purchase for a refund.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reminded consumers of the risks of consuming raw milk, which is not pasteurized to kill harmful bacteria. CDC recommends consuming raw milk.
Bacteria such as Campylobacter, Cryptosporidium, E. Coli, Listeria, Brucella and Salmonella can be found in raw milk. Children under 5 years old, adults over 65, pregnant women and people with a weakened immune system run a higher risk of serious illness.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised the choosing of pasteurized milk and dairy products and cooled perishable foods at 40 degrees F or colder to delay bacterial growth.
