Potassium supplements in salt were associated with reduced speeds of recurring stroke and mortality in a large-scale cluster-randomized clinical research involving patients in the countryside of North China. Findings come from a subgroup (stroke patients) analysis within the original Salt Substitute and Stroke Study (SSASS), an international study conducted in China.
Beroerto’s are among the top causes of death and disability in countries with low and middle income, and recurring events remain a great concern. High sodium intake and low potassium intake are considered important risk factors, especially in North China. In China, the repeat figures of the stroke are higher than global averages, up to 17% after one year and 41% for five years.
The SSASS test included 600 villages and 20,995 people in the China countryside. In the previous studies, researchers replace the salt of the participants with a salt of 75%, 25% potassium chloride replacement.
In the study, “salt replacement and recurring stroke and death: a randomized clinical study”, published in Jama CardiologyThe team analyzed data from 15,249 participants who had previously reported that they suffer from a stroke.
Researchers used data from the original study, which monitored blood pressure, repetition of stroke, mortality and safety results, including the risk of hyperkalaemia. Urine -Natrium/Potassium excretion was also followed.
During the study period, the recurrent stroke was 14% lower in the 25% potassium replacement group compared to the regular salt group, the same as found in the original complete cohort study.
The average systolic blood pressure on follow-up was lower in the salt replacement group compared to checks. A total of 2,735 recurring battle events took place, with 691 Fatale and 2,044 non -Fatale episodes.
Hemorrhagic stroke showed a relative reduction of 30% and stroke-related deaths fell by 21%. No useful difference in hyperkalaemia was observed between groups.
The findings indicate that salt reduction with 25% potassium is a safe, cheap nutritional intervention that can reduce repetition of strokes and mortality in survivors of strokes. Researchers suggest a broader implementation of salt substitutes, in particular in regions with high sodium intake and limited access to preventive health care.
