Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday at the United Nations Summit of the Future that in addition to terrorism, new areas of conflict are emerging and it is high time that “global action must be matched by global ambition”.
Prime Minister Modi pointed out that terrorism remains a serious threat to global peace and security and on the other hand said, “cyber, maritime and space are emerging as new areas of conflict”.
“On all these issues, I would like to emphasize that global action must match global ambition,” he added.
Speaking about the growing global concern over the dangers of new and evolving technologies, especially artificial intelligence, Prime Minister Modi said, “There is a need for balanced regulation at the global level, for the safe and responsible use of technology.”
According to the Wilmington Statement – made two days ago at the Quad meeting – the leaders of the US, Australia, Japan and India announced their intention to strengthen the partnership on cybersecurity.
“In the face of a deteriorating security environment in the cyber domain, the Quad countries intend to strengthen our partnership on cybersecurity to address common threats posed by state-sponsored actors, cybercriminals and other non-state malicious actors . Our countries commit to taking concrete steps. to enhance our collective network defenses and advance technical capabilities through greater threat intelligence sharing and capacity building,” the joint statement said.
The leaders in their statement had unequivocally condemned terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism.
“We are committed to international cooperation and will work in a comprehensive and sustainable manner with our regional partners to strengthen their capacity to prevent, detect and respond to threats posed by terrorism and violent extremism, including threats posed by use of new and emerging technologies for terrorist purposes, in accordance with international law,” the statement said.
“As we discuss the global future, we must give top priority to a people-centric approach while prioritizing sustainable development,” Prime Minister Modi also said.
“We must also ensure human well-being, food and healthcare security,” he added, stating that India was ready to share its experiences in eradicating poverty and bridging the digital divide.
