Prince William And Princess Kate Middleton are really just like us: dedicated pet owners.
While letting four-legged friends sleep in the same bed is often a hot topic, William and Kate, both 42, have proven that we’re not the only ones who make this happen.
While performing in Cornwall on Thursday, October 17, William visited a local resident and her pet. The participant later offered insight into their conversation on the walkabout during a performance Hits on Radio Cornwall.
“[William] said his little dog sleeps in bed with them at night, with him and Kate,” she told the outlet, per Hello! magazine.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, who share three children, are proud puppy parents to cocker spaniel Orla. Kate’s brotherJames Middletongifted them the dog in 2021, a year after their beloved pet Lupo died.
“Wonderfully enough, our sweet dog Lupo passed away last weekend,” William and Kate wrote via Instagram in November 2020. “He has been the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him dearly.”
Lupo had also been a gift from James, 37, who has several pets of his own. Many of James’ dogs, including late pup Ella, have helped him deal with mental health issues.
“Nothing can ever prepare you for the loss of a dog. For those who have never owned a dog, it can be difficult to understand the loss,” James noted in his own Instagram tribute following Lupo’s passing. “But those who have loved a dog know the truth: a dog is not just a pet; it is a member of the family, a best friend, a loyal companion, a teacher and a therapist.”
He added, “There aren’t many rules about how to mourn a dog, but I said a prayer, lit a candle and took Ella (mom) for a long walk to spend time commemorate Lupo. Rest in peace Lupin. Tilly & Mini are ready to help you. You will always be remembered and your legacy will live on forever. Good boy.”
Since Lupo’s death, William and Kate have found comfort with Orla. They recently went through a difficult time when the princess completed cancer treatment.
Kate was diagnosed with an unknown form of cancer earlier this year and will soon undergo a round of chemotherapy. She completed her treatment last month.
“The past nine months have been incredibly difficult for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and unknown roads,” Kate said in a September statement. “With humility you also come face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you’ve never thought about before, and with it a new perspective on everything. Above all, this time has reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple but important things in life that so many of us often take for granted.”
