Nelson posthumously accepted Prince’s Top Album trophy for his 1984 hit Purple rain at the AMAs 2016 in Los Angeles.
During her emotional speech, she said: “Prince defied all expectations.
“A black teenager from Minneapolis with the goal of electrifying the world, he had the courage to be different.
“With his vision (and) God-given talent, he remains one of the world’s most respected and beloved artists.”
She continued: “What he told me was that he wanted to be known as the world’s most prolific songwriter.
“And with 984 titles to his name, he has done just that
“In the words of Prince, ‘With love, honor and respect for every living thing in the universe, the separation ends and we all become one being and sing one song.'”
