Rachell 'Valkyrae' Hofstetter launches anime company Hihi Studios

Top gaming streamer Rachell Hofstetter, best known as Valkyrae, has launched her own media company, Hihi Studios, which will develop and produce IP for graphic novels, TV and film projects with a specific emphasis on anime-inspired content.

At launch, Hihi Studios has entered into a co-publishing agreement with digital comic book platform GlobalComix, which will see them finance, creatively develop and distribute the studio’s first IP both physically and digitally.

According to the company, “Hihi Studios will be all-encompassing, releasing shows, merchandise and products across every IP. It will aim to tell stories indicative of the world we live in, through its characters, storylines and themes, tapping into the global communities of anime and manga, as well as the larger animation ecosystem. The company hopes to respect and honor the existing culture while launching new and tailor-made series inspired by Japanese anime and manga, with new innovations and perspectives. The goal is to create stories with lasting power in a world of hyper-optimization and to connect audiences looking for stories and adventures with something more.”

Hihi Studios was founded in collaboration with Valkyrae’s manager and co-founder Kai Gayoso. Other founding members of the team include Gabe Pepe and Madeline McFerren, all from Range Media Partners, who represent Valkyrae.

Valkyrae is represented by Range Media Partners, WME, Hansen Jacobson Teller & Hoberman and imPRint.

How did you choose the name for the media company?

The company is called Hihi Studios. For years I always greeted my community and streams by saying ‘hihi’ and I thought this would be a nice way to have a little Easter egg for my community within the company. I wanted the name to be easy to remember and inviting and I like the symmetry of the logo.

Why did you decide to start your own business instead of partnering with an existing company?

I’ve been lucky enough to work with some incredible creatives to bring their own IPs to market and I’ve always felt like my community was excited to support me in my own IPs. It feels like the right time for me to defend my own ideas in a new medium that I haven’t explored yet. It’s something I hope to continue to be involved with for many years to come.

Will the focus be strictly on anime-inspired IP?

I’ve always loved anime and animation, so it will definitely inspire our projects in storytelling and the community around the different fandoms. We are also open to all types of graphic novels, comic books or manga or anime stories.

Which projects do you want to adjust first?

We want to create and launch stories that I see myself as an independent fan of. Some may be a bit more mature in nature, but we are not afraid to tackle hard topics such as death or war. Ultimately, I believe that the best stories are the ones that can tap into the universal experiences of discovering who we are as human beings, stories that the viewer can relate to and that absolutely focus on entertaining the audience.
